Bernie Schipelliti
has been involved in public safety since 1986, when
he was appointed as a reserve police officer and
completed training to become an Emergency Medical
Technician at Northeastern University. In 1989 he
became a full time police officer for the Town of
Burlington, where he is still employed. Throughout
his career he has concentrated on making traffic
safety a priority and was named his department’s
Traffic Safety Officer in 1998, a position he still
holds. In this position he interacts with motorists
of all ages on a daily basis.
A certified
Massachusetts Driver’s Education instructor for
MASSDOT, Bernie is also a nationally certified
instructor in Traffic Occupant Protection
Strategies, LIDAR & Radar (both speed measurement
courses) and Child Passenger Safety. He is trained
as an accident reconstructionist and investigates
fatal and serious crashes and as well as Commercial
Motor Vehicle Inspector performing roadside
inspections of vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds.
In addition
to teaching Driver’s Education, Bernie currently
conducts training classes for the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Police Training Committee, MASSDOT
Registry of Motor Vehicles, The Executive Office of
Public Safety and Security; Highway Safety Division,
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration &
Safe Kids Worldwide.
He was
chosen to sit on Governor Patrick’s JOL (junior
operator license) Committee and meets regularly with
this committee to review all policies regarding
teens and Driver’s Ed.
Bernie
completed his formal education at Western New
England College where he earned a Masters Degree in
Criminal Justice Administration. He continues to
maintain all of his certifications and has attended
national traffic safety conferences annually since
1999. He is married and has four children.
Fran Toomey has
been involved in public safety for over 28 years. As
a member of the Danvers Fire Department he has
responded to all types of crashes and emergencies on
both local roads and highways. Whether putting out
fires, providing first aid as an Emergency Medical
Technician or extricating victims from their cars,
Fran has first-hand knowledge of what a poor
decision behind the wheel can lead to. In his
current rank of Lieutenant, he is usually the person
in charge of these crash scenes.
A certified
Massachusetts Driver’s Education instructor for
MASSDOT Registry of Motor Vehicles, Fran is also
currently an instructor for National Safe Kids and
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Fran enjoys
teaching and uses the information he sees daily to
teach students the consequences of their actions. He
is married and has two children.
